The Garden at Eichstaett

These two lithographs were produced during a residency at Lithographie-Werkstatt Eichstätt. The images refer to the town of Eichstätt's famous Hortus Eystettensis (1613) -- an extensive botanical manuscript which sought to artfully depict, at life size, the plants cultivated in Prince Bishop Joham Konrad von Gemmingen's walled garden. The book aspired to depict a paradise on earth. Special attention was paid to the many exotic introduced species, as a way of demonstrating the importance of the gardens, and by extension, that of their owner.

The plants depicted in these lithographs are naturalised exotics (Herbst) from the garden of Li Portenlänger and supermarket imports (Ewiger Sommer), all sourced in Eichstätt .
